Build A 3 Bedroom House Slowly using the 52 Week Challenge.

What is the 52 Week Challenge?

This is a rapid graduated savings plan where one progressively saves weekly towards a worthy goal over a period of 52 Weeks(One Year). It gained popular support through the inspiration and work of Ms.Kellie (Rookie Manager Blog). We at Ujenzibora thank Kellie and Gikundo for making this important Way of Thinking public. Currently, more than 500 Kenyans are participating in the Savings Challenge and we at Ujenzibora took time to apply it to the Goal of Home Ownership. [See Worked Example below].

Instructions for Using the Savings Challenge Estimator

Welcome to the PoDcity 52-Weeks House Savings Challenge Calculator! This tool is designed to help you plan and achieve your homeownership goals through structured weekly savings. Whether you’re looking to build incrementally over time or save consistently, this calculator offers two unique savings methods tailored to fit various financial situations.

The 52-Weeks Challenge divides your savings into manageable weekly goals, with the flexibility to save for up to five years. By the end of your savings term, you’ll have accumulated funds precisely distributed across critical elements of your home’s construction, helping you budget effectively and make informed financial decisions.

  1. Enter the Total Cost of the House
Start by inputting the full estimated cost of the home you plan to build in Kenyan Shillings (Ksh). This amount should include all projected costs for materials, labor, permits, and other expenses.

  2. Input a Lump Sum Deposit (Optional)
If you intend to make an initial lump sum deposit, enter that amount here. If you prefer to save incrementally without a deposit, you can leave this field at the default value of zero (0).

  3. Choose Your Savings Type

    • Incremental Savings (Type 1): In this plan, your weekly savings amount gradually increases. This approach is ideal if you anticipate higher income or disposable savings over time.
    • Fixed Savings (Type 2): With this plan, you save a fixed amount every week. It’s suited for those with a consistent income who prefer predictable contributions.
  4. Select the Duration of Your Savings Plan
Choose the number of years you want to save for (1 to 5 years). The calculator will adjust the total weekly deposits based on your chosen term, breaking down savings into smaller, manageable weekly amounts.

  5. Click “Calculate Weekly Savings”
After entering the above details, press the button to calculate your weekly savings goal. The calculator will display a table showing each week’s deposit and your cumulative savings, helping you track progress throughout the term.

  6. Review the Savings Distribution Table
After calculating, a detailed distribution table appears, breaking down the cost of each element in the house (such as roofing, finishes, and plumbing) as per your total savings. This feature helps visualize how your funds will be allocated across different parts of the home construction.

  7. Visualize Your Savings Goals
Two charts, a bar chart and a pie chart, illustrate the cost distribution of your savings across home elements. These visuals offer an overview of how each part of the construction impacts your budget.
